COOPERU

COOPERU, a non-profit organization to help workers and their families was incorporated in September of 2004. With donations from Café Monte Alto the first project was started. An existing school was renovated, two additional teachers were hired and a 30% increase in students at the beginning of the 2005 school year is very encouraging. More children attending school means less children picking coffee.

Our next project will be the renovation and expansion of a medical post.

Café Monte Alto is committed to paying farmers a fair price for their coffee, so they, as in the past, can provide for their workers and communities. Today, most farmers are paid less for a pound of coffee than the average cost of a cup of coffee. So, Cafe Monte Alto has created COOPERU. Let farmers make a decent living without depending on donations.

For years, coffee growers around the world have had to face a severe crisis due to an overproduction of inferior quality beans grown mainly in Brazil and Vietnam. Many small farmers have had to leave their land, or worse yet, have cleared valuable shade trees to grow crops from which drugs are derived. The ecological consequences are devastating. Bird sanctuaries are destroyed, chemicals from illegal drug processing plants pollute waterways and poverty in the communities is overwhelming.

We are committed to bringing back the humanity and environmentally sound practices in the coffee industry. We are actively doing so by establishing a non-profit organization.

10% of Peruvian coffee sales go directly to COOPERU
